Your flowers will arrive 3–4 days before the wedding and need to spend most of that time resting in cool, controlled storage. Done right, overnight storage preserves their freshness and keeps them looking their best for the big day.
The Ideal Storage Conditions
| Factor | Ideal Range | Notes |
| Temperature | 34–40°F (1–4°C) | A standard home refrigerator (38–40°F) works well. Never freeze. |
| Humidity | 80–95% | Keep flowers in water and loosely covered with plastic to maintain humidity. |
| Darkness | Dark or dim light | Light encourages opening. Keep dark if you want to slow blooms down. |
| Ethylene gas | Avoid sources | Keep away from fruits, vegetables, and exhaust fumes. Ethylene ages flowers rapidly. |
Using a Home Refrigerator
A standard kitchen fridge works surprisingly well — with a few adjustments:
- Clear out shelves before your flowers arrive. You'll need room for tall buckets.
- Remove fruits and vegetables from the fridge. They emit ethylene gas that shortens flower life.
- Set temperature to 38–40°F. Colder than that risks freezing delicate petals.
- Keep flowers in water at all times. Dry storage dramatically shortens vase life.
- Loosely cover with plastic (a large trash bag works) to hold humidity around the blooms without sealing them airtight.
- Don't store finished bouquets flat — they'll bruise. Keep them upright in vases or tall buckets.
No Refrigerator? Use a Cool Room
If you don't have refrigerator space, a cool room can work — especially in fall and winter. You're looking for:
- A basement, garage, or cool spare room that stays below 65°F overnight
- No direct sunlight or heat vents
- Good airflow (not stuffy)
- Flowers kept in water with floral preservative
In summer, a cool room is usually not cool enough — stick to the refrigerator.
What Needs Special Treatment
| Flower | Refrigerator? | Notes |
| Roses, ranunculus, lisianthus | Yes ✓ | Store well. Keep in water. |
| Peonies (not yet open) | Yes ✓ | Refrigerator slows opening. Move to warm room 24 hrs before you need them open. |
| Hydrangea | Yes ✓ | Keep very well watered. Wilts fast. |
| Dahlias | Yes ✓ | Keep cool. Short vase life — don't store more than 1–2 nights. |
| Anemones | Yes ✓ | Refrigerator keeps them closed. Move to room temp to encourage opening. |
| Tropical flowers (orchids, anthuriums, birds of paradise) | No ✗ | Cold-sensitive. Store at room temperature (60–70°F). |
| Eucalyptus & greens | Optional | Last so long that refrigeration is not critical. A cool room works fine. |
Storing Finished Arrangements
Once your arrangements are built (the day before the wedding), here's how to keep them overnight:
- Centerpieces: Keep in their vases with water, in a cool room. Cover loosely with plastic wrap if the room is dry.
- Bouquets: Stand upright in vases of water in the refrigerator. Don't lay flat.
- Boutonnieres and corsages: Mist lightly, wrap in damp paper towel, place in a plastic bag, and refrigerate. They hold very well.
- Day of: Remove from storage 1–2 hours before the ceremony. Mist lightly. Avoid direct sun.
